Prof-It! Episode 33: Charizard Deck Analysis

Hey everybody! I hope all is going well in your preparation before City Championships/Thanksgiving! This week I decided to talk about a deck beyond most of my established “Top 10″ lists, and talk about an underrated deck: Charizard! Hope you guys enjoy!

    Great analysis, thanks! For my son and me, who just started playing a few months ago, the major advantage of this deck of the ones you listed is its low low price. With all of its moving parts, however–Ninetales, Typhlosion, and at least one Charizard all really have to be up and running for things to be working–it takes a while to set up. With testing, we find that keeping all those lines evolving, and simultaneously getting enough energy in hand to fire up Charizard and Roast Reveal too, is a challenge. To help with that, we run more energy than you do (3 call 11 fire I think), but it’s still tough.

    I also second your comment on Seeker–we’ve replaced all of our flippy SSU’s w/ Seekers, because like you said the retreat cost is paid back w/ Afterburner. (The Discover Card of Pokemon.) Yeah it can help your opponent too, but late game maybe not as much.

      just realized a seeker on a benched typhlosion could also let you attach another energy – so theoretically, you could do 3-4 energy in one turn with 2 typhlosions in play.

    No mention of call energy? I think 3 are important for more consistency with all the speed in the meta. I also think 2-3 PONT are also helpful with this deck as it can clear your hand of un-used trainers, help get access to the needed fire energy, and works great with BTS and 3 evo lines.

    Regarding the seekers – if you have a damaged Charzard you might want to seeker, you most likely only have 2 energy attached because prior turn you had to discard a fire for your attack. That means you will have to attach to retreat, or use one of your typhlosion attaches. That means a fully powered Charzard the same turn is not possible, right? I would rather just hit for the 130 and build-up a 2nd Charzard with my attach, or use warp point for the seeker use, instead of paying retreat cost. Just my opinion.

    Another tech that could easily fit is Blaziken FB to drag up dialga G x or vileplume UD.

      I’m not a big fan of call in charizard because charmander already has a “mini-call” attack, and vulpix’s attack is a good way to start, too. I haven’t tested it though, so I guess I can’t mock it till I’ve tried it!

      Yeah, using seeker is entirely up to the situation that presents itself. Depending on whether or not it would be more beneficial to KO your opponent’s pokemon, and whether or not you could get the knockout with fire wing are all factors in whether or not attacking or retreating to seeker is a good play.

      Blaziken is definitely a fun tech to consider–plus he’s another fire for your bench. I’ll have to try him out.

        I have to agree with the first post in favor of including some call energy for consistency. The lone Cyndaquil start is pretty terrible, and Vulpix doesn’t get those evo lines moving. I do agree that Charmander’s a nice start though.6P’ers seem to have some strong opinions on call/no-call, so I’ll shut up now.

        I’ve got to say i’ve tried out blaziken, and it works great.
        Especielly in tough spots where you need to pull out something
        with high retreat. And it’s a good replacment for pokemon reversal.

        If Charmander’s attack put the pokemon on the bench I would tend to agree. But since it doesn’t, I prefer Call. Ideally Fire energy being so critical, it would be nice not to have to worry about a faster set-up, but in my experience call helps more than it hurts. Especially with the emergence of machamp again.

        I honestly feel crazy for disagreeing with “the Wittz”, who could outplay me 80% of the time I’m sure, but my practice against the meta decks says call can be invaluable.

        chances are you’ve probably played more charizard than I have : P. I’ve just been testing it these past two weeks because I wanted to try some new things before inevitably going back to what I know (sablock and friends). I’ll definitely try out call on your word

        Blaziken is a blast to use with Charizard, i run a 2-2 and it helps disrupt and also jet shoot is very valuable in a pinch too!!

        Might be cool to do a “Mock” prerelease tournament where you talk about deck building strategies for an event where you don’t know what any of the cards do and have to build a working deck in a limited amount of time.

    Where’s the stark mountain? Where’s the infernape 4 Lv.X? Where’s the rescue energy? You definitely run a charizard deck alot different than me lol. very nice breakdown of a basic charizard.

    Hey I think that you should really do a DialgaChomp Deck Analysis before cities, since it is considered the hardest SP deck to play and i think that people would appreciate any help they could get with it, and you’ve done LuxChomp and its nothing like that deck, and that its being considered the BDIF right now by a lot of people, I think that its time for this deck to get some J-Wittz loving!

    Try dumping the Typhlosion for another 2 Shiny Vulpix and 2 UL Ninetales. The UL Ninetales has two attacks; for one fire energy you can take three fire energy from your discard pile and attach them to one of your Pokemon. The second attack is Searing Flame. For one fire and one colorless energy it does 30 damage and burns the defending pokemon.

    Hey Jwitts dude i completely agree on first turn trainers because not only because of the sableeye deck but also you are right the game shouldnt basically be based on a coin flip i think they should stick with the tournament rules that are flying right now but i dont mind the black and white trainer item new movement that isnt so bad but there are decks that will win on the first turn bout 8 out of ten times you are right i have been waiting to actually talk about this situation since like april 9 when i got the three new black and white theme decks i definetly dont think they should change the game based on japans opionions! but either way my name is Croccet from Claremont, New Hampshire and i am behind you dude 100% bro!!!!!I pretty sure for regionals tomorrow or i hope they havent rotated out anything new cause i got the decklist regestration sheet from states last time and thats what im going by. good luck man

    i am completly behind you on the first turn knockout stuff dude that gives sableye decks the upper hand on all deck types it doesnt matter they win like 7 or 8 out of 10 times which i a real big advantage but anyway i am completley behind you on the black and white new format cause like a week ago when i got the three new theme decks for black and white they had the new rules on this little sheet and i think they should just keep it the same your right so people dont get confused. i like the tounament rules that are in place right now…like tomorrow at regionals im pretty sure they still havent changed it from states till now so im pumped for tomorrow man!!but i like your show and keep doing what your doing and youll have more and more people see it then hopefully they will change there minds and keep it the same!!!!!
