“On the last turn I am only able to get a Charizard with one Fire Energy because I had been power locked. I use Intimidating Roar again, and he switches to Regice. I have two Belts in my deck, one of which is in my discard. I need the Belt to KO the Regice for my last prize. I rely on the PONT in my hand for the Belt because of the power lock.”

How did you use intimidating roar under a power lock?

Regardless, know how hard it can be to remember 4 cities at once, so I’m sure it was just a misunderstanding. Everything was well written, and good luck the rest of the season!

My bad, it must have been my second Warp Point, I must have warped to Infernape, and just retreated him. Good catch.

      >.> I dunno about greatest lol. Nice deck btw, both other Charizard players in Westminster had decks very similar to that and both did pretty well.

I used to run Charizard at league, and one problem I always had with it was getting out enough basics. Your lists (a lot like mine at the time) both have 10 basics. Pokepedia’s calculator says that means a 40% chance of getting just one basic, and a 25% chance of a mulligan, from your opening hand. Looks like your meta didn’t have so much donk in it, so maybe not so bad for you, but I ended up getting donked a lot.

have you ever thought about call energy?

That build looks surprisingly situational. I haven’t been playing Pokemon that long but I know deck synergy, Charizard seems better without Techs. It could just be your area, but I run a 4-3-4 line with 3 Rare Candy and 3 BTS, 2-2 Ninetales and 2-2-2 Typhlosion with 9 Fire Energies and 2 Rescues. My impression was that the Charizard deck was built for speed and power, So when I ran Rapidash or Infernape 4 techs it just slowed the deck down and made for bad top decks. I liked Warp Point at first but it felt like Spiritomb or Vileplume crippled that chance to get Charizard out to the Active spot, leaving Ninetales or worse, Typhlosion getting murked. For that I run 2 Unown Qs, along with Palmer’s for some insurance and 2 Uxies and 1 Azelf for the sake of speed and necessity. In addition to 3 Poke Coms and 4 Bebe’s for the sake of Trainer lock again.

I’m glad that build works for you though, it adds some annoyance to the power of the deck.

    • Travis

I already draw charmeleon way more than I want to, so adding another one doesn’t seem like a great idea. It’s also for that reason I don’t run quilavas. In any game that’s not trainer lock, I have no problem getting him out. The superior draw engine of ninetales means you can rely on hitting a large group of your cards, which is consistancy in it’s own. Uxie sometimes slows me down a bit just sitting there, I couldn’t imagine having an azelf, and an additional Uxie down there too, that maxes you at a base of 50 and 100 instead of 80 and 130. It seems to me THAT draws from the power.

Infernape has won me so many games, I wouldn’t think about taking him out for one second. I would never use rapidash, but making your opponent warp, and a Pokemon that you can throw up, and free retreat back to when a Zard gets KOd is just too good to not use. With fisherman, and 3 rescue energy, I find that I always have the pokemon I need without palmers or flower shop.

In short, I don’t think my build deters from power at all. In fact, the build you described sounds like a build I made to directly counter Vilegar at one point (High bebes and middle evelotions in exchange for speed), and yes, that build is awesome against vilegar, maybe even pulls the matchup to 50-50 (fainting spell can ruin charizard) but it’s too slow against other decks.

Also, if I could, I would be running 3 BTS but I’m poor, and no one ever has any to trade.

I took into consideration how common Seeker is among deck, like BTS, so you can afford to run 2 or 1. I run 3 for the sake of speed, and 3 Seeker for the space that Azelf or Uxie takes. I can manage a 2 spaces being taken up for -20 damage if it means Uxie or Azelf got me a Fire energy or Typlosions. Since I run low energies I don’t Roast Reveal too often for the sake of getting a Afterburner x2 and an attach for the turn for a 1 turn Burning Tail, while hitting the magic number 110. I still run a belt or the sake of bigger Pokemon, but most of the Pokemon that aren’t bigger than Charizard have trouble OTKing it.

      • Travis

I see where you’re going with that. I May actually run some tests with a build like that and see how quick it runs. It seems that everyone has their own way to run Charizard, it’s awesome. It’s like every LuxChomp list is exactly the same, but Zard decks are all over the place as far as how they want to get to their final set-up.

charizard’s cool, but have you ever considered using more stage 1s? you run 4-2-4 zard (which is too many zard in the first place), i run 3-3-3. I’ not saying I’m the expert, but it really helps the vilegar matchup. And wassup with no Quilava?

    • Travis

I highly disagree XD. In a good game I go through all of my available Charizards. I have actually built up and attacked with 6 different Charizards in one game using Rescue Energy. Also you want to max the odds of always having a Charizard and/or a Charmander in your hand so maxing them is very necessary. Like I said in the article, I try and avoid the idea of vilegar even existing. I’ve never faced more than 1 in any tournament I’ve been to, so I just try my best when I hit one. What if Uxie donk worried about vilegar?

Charizard is my favorite pokemon! I run a very similar deck to yours but instead of 2 fishermen, I run 2 pokemon reversals. Is this a good idea? I run it just in case my opponent has dialga on the bench.

    • Travis

if you’re really lucky with coin flips they’re awesome! I also use both fisherman in most games and it saves my life. if it works for you then thats cool

Thanks! I will keep that in mind.

I really liked the article man. I too have a passion for the fiery beast. ;) I have made other decks like sp, but I always find myself going back to Charizard, I just really love how the deck works, and how it doesn’t really have any bad matchups as long as you get a decent start. I also like how Charizard lists can be very different, for example, your list is a lot more speedier then mine, but I play a more slower Charizard list that takes a little longer setting up.
Again, I loved the article and congratulations on making top cut. :) Also, I was wondering, what division are you in?

    • Travis

      Thanks, glad you liked it.

      Also I’m in Masters division.
