My Indiana Regionals Report 5-3 with Shuppet + Lists (Sabledonk!)

Hey SixPrizes members, it’s Ndrewzorz here with my Indiana Regional Championships Report! This is my first article, so please don’t be too critical. Sorry it’s coming so late, I haven’t had time to write with golf and family stuff. This was only my third tournament in my life, so I’m fairly new to the game.

Anyway, here’s my list of what I played at the tournament:

Pokemon – 14 3 Shuppet PL 1 Dunsparce HS 2 Uxie LA 1 Azelf LA 4 Crobat G PL 3 Unown R LA

Energy – 4 4 Psychic

As you can see, this isn’t a conventional donk list. I didn’t run Dual Ball; it’s too flippy. Palmer’s Contribution and Azelf are both not seen too often in lists like this either, but I’ve found that they are essential if you want a chance late game running only 2 Uxies.

I only played 2 Uxies because that was all I had at the time, and it worked well with just two anyway. I didn’t use Regice because it took up bench and deck space and I rarely used it in testing.

For a little while I was thinking about running Dialga G LV.X for a better late game matchup against lock decks, but it didn’t work out too well because of its 2 retreat cost and it took up a lot of room in my deck.

I chose only 3 Unown R because of availability and because it really didn’t help as much as I thought it would in testing.

Round 1 Vs Matt w/ LuxChomp

I started off pretty well with a Dunsparce active and an Unown R on the bench, and hand full of Crobats, and a PlusPower against his active Garchomp C and loaded hand. We flip, and he goes first.

He attaches a Call Energy, plays down an Uxie and uses “Set Up” then uses Call Energy to get another Garchomp C and a Luxray GL. My turn, I took the first prize by dropping 2 Crobats and using “Flash Bite” twice then attaching a PlusPower and an energy to “Fade Out” for the first prize 5-6.

He sends out Uxie then it’s his turn. He does some stuff then passes. I then proceed to take his Uxie after getting a Pokemon Collector to and using it to get a Shuppet 4-6. It looked like it was going my way, but then he turned it around.

I try to Set Up twice, both times getting sprayed and ended up with just 2 cards in my hand. He bright looked up my Uxie, Poke Turns, and starts to use “Dragon Rush”.

I can’t do anything since he has 2 Power Sprays left and me having only one energy that I wasn’t going to waste. Finally, not being able to pull any Warp Point, he puts me out of my misery, taking 6 straight prizes.

Round 2 Vs ??? w/ Lostgar

We flip and I get to go second. My hand looks pretty ugly, with 2 Shuppet and an energy along with a Pokemon Collector and like 3 Junk Arm. He turned over the Gastly, Then I was thinking “awe crap, I’m screwed.” Luckily, he left it alone and uses “Pitch Dark.”  I go, use a Collector for 2 Crobats and use “Fade Out” for the donk. OH YA first win! :D

Round 3 Vs Dean w/ Gyarados

I start out with no basics 4 times in a row and he gets to draw his mulligan cards. By this time, his hand is amazing and I have a Shuppet, energy, an Unown R, an Uxie, a collector, a Poke Drawer, and a Poke Blower.

I get a lucky draw and end up using all four Poke Drawers by turn three and we were trading prizes after that. It went on for three turns more, but somehow I ended up leaving only one poke on the bench and he Seeker ko’s me. D’OH!

Round 4 Vs Derek w/ Metagross?

I didn’t get to see much of this deck because the battle was so fast. He went first with a lone Beldum and passed and I ended up with the first turn donk. I kind of felt bad, being it his first tournament and all, but I had to get my wins too.

Round 5 Vs Jake w/ Magnechamp + stuff

Not much to say about this game either, except that it was a weird deck I’ve never seen before. I started out with pretty much everything I need in my hand (an Expert Belt, energy, and like 2 PlusPower) and just ran through his deck, taking a prize a turn while he couldn’t do much (he had a pretty bad start from what I could see). I ended up KO’ing his Entei Raikou Legend ftw.

Round 6 Vs David w/ Speedchamp

Now that I finally broke the pattern of lose, win, lose, win, I started to have a little bit of confidence in my deck. But, it was donk deck against donk deck, and my matchups with this deck were about 50-50, depending if they ran Lumineon or not (with Lumineon it was about 30-70 to 35-65).

Anyway, this match took like a half an hour to get started (computer difficulties and a bunch of re-pairs) but when it did start, it started up quick. We both got our main attackers swinging fast, and to make a long story short, it came down to my turn with each player only having one prize left, and if I didn’t take it I lost.

I didn’t have a Shuppet in my hand and I needed to do an extra 10 damage to ko his active anyway. I had one Poke Drawer in my hand and needed to top deck another one to search for what I needed to win. I GOT IT and ended up winning. Overall, it was an amazing battle. Thanks Dave, I hope to see you at Nationals!

So at this time I think I probably need both wins to top cut because my resistance wasn’t looking too good, and then I end up against my nightmare.

Round 7 Vs Mike w/ Vilegar

Vilegar. ‘Nuff said.

Since I was at the top of the 4-2 tables that round (I’m not sure what happened), I thought maybe I calculated my resistance wrong and it might be good enough to get to top cut (I knew that some 5-3 players would make it), so I went ahead and stayed for the last round.

Final Round Vs Jeff w/ Steelix & Scizor Prime

I got off to an average start with a Shuppet, Dunsparce, energy, and tons of Crobat. I go first and flash bite his Onix twice (with 2 of my Crobats, no Poke Turn) and “Fade Out” with Shuppet for 30 more damage.

On his turn, he top decks a Scyther, plays it down, then passes. I use Warp Point + kill his Scyther for another prize. His turn, he plays down his other Scyther and a Jirachi RR, evolves his Onix, and then passes again after attaching a Special Metal.

I use another Warp Point KO his Jirachi, then he uses “Final Wish” to search for a Scizor Prime and sends out Steelix Prime. On his turn he evolves his Scyther, attaches a metal energy to Steelix Prime, then uses “Energy Stream” on one of my Crobats.

I use Junk Arm for a Warp Point and he has to send out his Scizor Prime with no energy. I use Fade Out for 50 then he passes. I use Seeker + KO his Scizor for the win.

So I decided to stick around for a while thinking that maybe I would top cut. But realizing that I had dropped almost 15 tables after my last loss, I thought that I probably wouldn’t be top cutting; but it was still possible. So I stuck around for an hour, made some friends and some trades.

Then they announce the standings. I wasn’t announced, but I went up to see where I was in the rankings anyway. I missed it by 16 spots, but can’t complain because I had fun.

Props

• My brother top cutting in the Juniors Division
• Meeting new people
• Buying 2 HGSS Lugia/Ho-oh mats for $20 a piece
• Trading a bunch of old ex’s for playable Primes and LV.X’s
• Finishing my Vilegar deck
• Beating Jeff, who placed in the 60’s in the Seniors Division of the World Championships last year
• Fairly good matchups, minus the Luxchomp and Vilegar
• Being done before 8 :D

After this tournament (if I could still effectively use it), I would change my list to look like this for Battle Roads:

Energy – 4 4 Psychic

I found that I almost always had at least 3 Crobat out at a time, so running Power Spray would be a nice little addition to this build if I miss the first turn donk, giving them a slower set up.

Running a VS Seeker in exchange for one of my Buck’s Training would just help me for consistency late game.

Unown R are becoming worse and worse in my eyes and haven’t really helped me much, plus I can get them back (if I want to) with Palmer’s Contribution even though they are just filler cards.

Now, I know with the new rulings this deck is out of date, but this could be a pretty good base list for Sabledonk.

Just replace the Shuppet and Dunsparce with 4 Sableye SF, the 4 psychic energy for 4 special dark,  and take out the PlusPower for another Expert Belt or two, another Buck’s Training, and maybe a Chatot md.

If you can pass with just 3 Expert Belt, I’d suggest throwing in another Seeker to get the donk faster. And if it works for you, you could use Dual Balls instead of Collectors, but leave one in so you can impersonate for it if need be.

Also, in this list, Regice is a must to get rid of Spiritomb and get the donk in some matchups you normally wouldn’t get. Since Buck’s Training isn’t practical, you should drop the last one for one.
