Great article! Now I know what to use in place of the number of Call Energies I can’t seem to get my hands on.

This is probably one of my favorite articles! Very informative and I never looked at Lapras from GE like that! Rather, I never paid any attention to it as it was just a rare and looked kinda weak. But now that I see what it does, that’s not half bad! Easily replacing Call Energy in a water deck! And what’s better is that one water energy used to get out your 3 basic Pokemon can also be used to retreat if needed!

    Excellent job!

Excellent article. I’d give Chatot G an honourable mention too. Although his Power won’t work when you start with him, the ability to get any Trainer card from your deck is very good. Plus, he goes back into your deck so he is re-usable. Of course you need to have another Basic Pokemon ready to take his place in the active position.

hey, you gave away my secret tech to everyone! Lol I used to love SW Furret, I just don’t have space for it anymore. Great Article, Reminded me of a lot of good cards I knew of, but totally forgot about.

    Good article.

Beginners will love this article, not many people talk about starters now adays, so its good for beginners to learn about them, it might help them become more creative.

But no one talks about starters for a reason. The game today is so fast that 90% of decks cant have startes in them. In this day and age you must have your best attack by turn 2 or ya might have already lost, and most starters get in the way more than they help.

But when used correctly in the best decks, starters can help ya out.

Great article, very comprehensive. I agree with Pikkdogs, though, in that starters aren’t as crucial in many decks as they used to be.

GREAT article Andrew!!! You covered all bases in this one…seriously awesome job.

I never really thought about using Lapras before but it does seem pretty good! I’m just worried with all the quick decks out at the moment if starters are truly needed, like some people mentioned.

Furret SW is a gnarly card. I used it with Gardy/Gallade during the infancy of the deck and got 2nd at States with it. I wish it was a basic though haha.

I also sorta like Crobat G as a starter, just because it has decent HP and free retreat. That’s always good.

I think it would be funny if someone were to make a list of the WORST starters. :x

So, since everyone else already told you it’s a great article, I’m not going to just slather more on top, and just point out a couple things I disagree with, or that I think you missed.

#1 Lapras: Note; This basically works like a Cyrus engine for S2 decks that run a fair amount of Tools (Expert Belt, Bench Shield)

#2 Pachirisu: This thing can pull obscene amounts of damage for a single Energy and an Expert Belt against Lightning weak decks like Kingdra or Palkia G that abuse Tools. This is pretty much Jumpluff’s best shot at a decent game against Palkia G, along with being a very good starter for the deck.

#7 Chatot: Most decks don’t run more than 2 Warp Point/Switch. So if you can start using Chatter early on against a Starter, it can often get you an auto prize, while still setting up behind it. Sure, it’ll be revenge KO bait, but if your deck is slower than theirs, it’s worth slowing down their deck enough for you to get your own setup. It’s also great against those not-perfect starts, like a Baltoy/Azelf/Unown G. Decks running Double Colorless can really abuse Chatter.

Thanks for the praise and feedback, everyone! I really appreciate it.

I just want to address Dialga G as a starter option for a second, since it seems to keep coming up.

Dialga G was not mentioned because it is only capable of leading consistently in an SP-based deck, or a deck with a Cyrus engine. It requires a specific and relatively uncommon form of energy (Metal), its ability to lock is contingent upon you going second, and it doesn’t splash into the majority of decks out there without serious consideration being given to it.

The starters I mentioned are designed to function whether you go first or second (with the exception of Jirachi which still works even if you go first, because it can trigger on getting knocked out on your opponent’s turn) and they are designed to function in more than just SP decks. Most of them function efficiently for free or one colorless Energy whereas Dialga needs two Energies or a specific color of Energy and a tool. That was why I didn’t mention Dialga G, but I do acknowledge that a Deafen-lock is absolutely crippling if set up properly. ;)

Nice article. Can I use this at my league? This is perfect for the new kids on the block…and it definitely made me look at some of them again in a different light.
