This guide will teach you how to set up and configure the Apprentice program for playing the Pokemon Trading Card Game over the internet on your Mac.
These are updated instructions (as of 8/8/2010) that work on my MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.4 and Intel processor. For old instructions that may work with more dated Macs, please refer to the guide at the very bottom of this page.
Step 1 – Download and Install Apprentice
- Download Apprentice.
- Open the zip and click on the Apprentice application file. It should self install.
- Move the Apprentice application file to the Applications folder. (optional)
Step 2 – Install the Latest Pokemon TCG Patch
- Download the patch (updated to HGSS: Undaunted)
- Open the zip and then open the folder contained within it. You should see 3 things: Expan.dat, Format.dat, and a Sets Folder.
- Select all 3 items by holding the Command key, right (alternate) click on them, and select “Copy 3 Items.”
- Open the Finder and navigate your way here: Home (whatever you named your Mac) -> Library -> Application Support -> Wine -> prefixes -> Apprentice for Mac -> drive_c -> Program Files -> Apprentice.
- Paste the three items you copied earlier into this folder. Replace all the existing files when prompted.
- This is also the location where your decks and other Apprentice files are stored, just so you know.
Step 3 – Download Hamachi (And How To Use It On Mac)
Hamachi is a necessary tool for using Apprentice, as it allows you to safely connect to your online opponent in order to play a game. It is very difficult and potentially dangerous to connect to an opponent without Hamachi. The Mac version of Hamachi is very bare bones, but will get the job done.
It doesn’t offer the chat feature the Windows version contains, unfortunately. This means that you will have to chat with your opponent through some other means, like Skype or AIM, in order to get connected.
- Make sure you uninstall any previous versions of Hamachi, if you have any installed. (Just do a search within the Finder for Hamachi and delete any files you see or use the Uninstaller file if you see one.)
- Download the latest LogMeIn Hamachi for Mac file you see on this page. You can also use this direct link, but it may not be the lastest version. It will be a .dmg file that will open to a .pkg file that should install easily with a few clicks.
- Open the Mac Terminal (located in Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal)
- In the Terminal, type “hamachi start” (without the quotes for this and all following instructions) and press enter
- You should now see a set of commands that accompany Hamachi. In order to execute any of them, simply type “hamachi” before the command and fill in the rest.
- For example, set your nickname by typing “hamachi set-nick NICKNAME” where NICKNAME is replaced with whatever you want your nickname to be (and press enter)
- You will probably want to either join an existing network or create a new one.
- To join an existing network, type: “hamachi join NETWORK PASSWORD” where you will replace NETWORK with the network name and PASSWORD with the password.
- To create a new network, type “hamachi create NETWORK PASSWORD” …I think you probably have got the hang of it by now.
- To actually see the IP addresses of the people within the networks you are a part of, type “hamachi list” and press enter. You should now see a list of all the networks you have joined, along with all the members of those networks.
- You will need the IP address shown of your opponent to connect with them over Apprentice. You use that IP for calling them.
- That should be it…I’ve tried using the command “hamachi login” to login to my account, but it always says I’m already logged in. You may need to login though if you’re having issues.

One Apprentice Caveat on Mac…
The chat box is one thing that doesn’t seem to get along perfectly with Mac… if you notice, when you click on the playing field, the chat box will disappear. It doesn’t stay on the foreground so you can see it while you’re playing. To get around this issue, here’s what you do:
When you first open Apprentice, click on the left edge of the chat box and drag it down, entirely out of the playing field.
You won’t have the issue of it disappearing behind the main screen anymore. You may need to resize the Apprentice screen to make room for the chat box at the bottom.
If it ever disappears before you can move it, select Communications -> Chat -> Bring To Top from the menu on Apprentice. You can also uncheck “Anchor” from this same menu.
Getting Started On Apprentice…
- Open Apprentice and click on “Options” at the top, then “Set Name”. Enter the name you would like to appear in chat during battle.
- Now click “Options” again, but this time select “Preferences”. You may want to tinker with these options to suit your needs.
Follow this guide to learn the rest of what you need to know in order to play the Pokemon TCG on Apprentice.
OLD INSTRUCTIONS
Thanks to drrty byl for these instructions. Please refer to this page if you have any questions.
Step 1 – Download Apprentice and Necessary Files
Save these three files into a folder you will be able to retrieve later on:
- Apprentice Program
- Pokemon Patch (updated through Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver, contact jermy101@aol.com if you come across any errors)
- Hamachi (lastest Mac download will be on this page, it’s currently in beta right now)
- Darwine
- X11 Window Manager: 10.3.9 or older, 10.4+, or from the OS X installation disc
- DB’s Apprentice Dock Launcher (not necessary, but launches Apprentice quickly like any other OS X application)
Step 2 – Install OS X Stuff
- Install X11 Window Manager
- Double-click the downloaded archive to expand it.
- Navigate to the folder where the archive was expanded using Finder and double-click the “X11SDK.pkg” file, follow installation instructions.
- Double-click the “X11User.pkg” file, follow installation instructions.
- Darwine
- Double-click the downloaded file to mount it.
- Drag the Darwine and Trix files to the Applications folder as indicated (or for PPC Darwine, drag the “Darwine” folder into Applications).
- Make Hidden Files and Folders Visible
- You can do this by using Finder to navigate to Applications/Utilities/, double-clicking the Terminal icon, and typing “defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE” at the command prompt (no quotes), hitting enter, and then closing the application.
- You’ll then need to restart Finder by pressing and holding command+alt+ESC, selecting Finder from the list, and clicking the “Relaunch” button. This step is needed to navigate to the wine folder in order to patch Apprentice files.
Step 3 – Install Apprentice.exe and Start Playing Using Darwine
- Navigate to the Wine Helper application in /Applications/Darwine/WineHelper and double-click it.
- From WineHelper, press “Command(apple)+O” for Open and navigate to the location of the file downloaded in step 1.2
- Select the Apprentice.exe file and hit Open.
- At this point, Darwine may give you a message in the output window about needing to configure itself.
- If nothing happens, simply repeat this step up to this point.
- Now follow the Apprentice installation instructions that show up.
- Switch over to the X11 terminal window and navigate to the Apprentice folder by typing “cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Apprentice/” at the prompt (no quotes).
- Now type “/Applications/Darwine/Wine.bundle/Contents/bin/wine Appr.exe” (no quotes), cross your fingers, and hit Enter.
- An Apprentice window should launch and you can being using the program as usual.
- Set patches are applied in the same manner as on a “real” “Windows” machine by pasting files into the “/Users/-Your User Name-/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Apprentice/” directory.
- To run the program in the future you’ll need to use the line “/Applications/Darwine/Wine.bundle/Contents/bin/wine Appr.exe” from the “/Users/-Your User Name-/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Apprentice/” at the X11 prompt, or download the dock launcher icon, which will run the script and start the program automatically.
Step 4 – Installing the Pokemon Patch
Apprentice was originally created for Magic: The Gathering, so that is why we need to install a Pokemon TCG patch.
- Open the Pokemon patch file downloaded in step 1.
- Extract all of its contents into your Apprentice folder.
- You will be asked if you would like to overwrite existing files. Select “Yes to All”.
Step 5 – Configuring Apprentice
Open the actual Apprentice program by double clicking on “Appr.exe”, either in the Apprentice folder or on your desktop (if you created a shortcut).- Click on “Options” at the top, then “Set Name”. Enter the name you would like to appear in chat during battle.
- Now click “Options” again, but this time select “Preferences”. You may want to tinker with these options to suit your needs.
