Howdy guys, it’s Soul again. This time I’m writing about one of my current fun decks; it doesn’t have a big chance to survive in the current format because of the big impact of Luxray GL LV.X.
You may have heard of a Yanmega deck in the late past, played with Shaymin LV.X to reattach all the energies with Seed Flare to do big damage as well. But this one is a little bit different. First, let’s take a look at Yanmega. It has 100 HP which is quite okay for a Stage 1 Pokémon. There are some ones with more hit points, for example Gyarados, Blissey or Wailord, but I guess you can deal with it.
Next to that we can see that it’s a Grass type, which is a pretty weak type in the current format, as almost nothing will be weak to you. That’s bad, but oh well it’s only a fun deck.
His Poke-Power “Speed Boost” is kinda like Trapinch’s “Gather Sand” Poke-Power, you can search you discard pile for a Grass Energy and attach it to Yanmega, but only if Yanmega is your active Pokémon. I’ll come back to this point later, as it’s a part of the main strategy.
Yanmega has two attacks. “Speed Dive” is just bad; for 4 Energies you can dish out 70 damage. What!? Are we back in the old days where we did 30 damage for three Energies?
Luckily, jis first attack is much better. “Wind Return” does 20 damage and you have the option to return all of Yanmega’s Grass Energy cards back to your hand to do 20 more damage for each one. Quite powerful, eh? In combination with his Poke-Power and Expert Belt you can do at least 80 damage each turn without any form of other Energy acceleration.
As I mentioned above, Yanmega has a Lightning weakness which is pretty bad in the current format, Luxray GL will eat this thing alive. His Fighting resistance can help against Machamp, but it isn’t that much around anymore. Free retreat is always nice to have, especially with a Poke-Power like Yanmega’s one.
So now let’s talk about the strategy. The mechanic is pretty fun to play, it just needs some more speed, so you can try Poke Drawer + if you want to. You should attach as many Energy cards from your hand to Yanmega as you can and as well an Expert Belt.
To use Yanmega’s Poke-Power “Speed Boost” you need some cards that discard energy cards from your hand, there are two Supporter cards I can think of; Volkner’s Philosophy and Felicity’s Drawing. I play two of each in my deck and it works pretty well. In addition to those two I have some Pokémon for discarding support. Blissey PL can consistently discard your Energies and allow you to remove two damage counters from one of your Pokémon each turn. The other one is Alakazam MT because there are some Poké-Powers around which are troublesome, such as Dusknoir’s “Dark Palm” and Luxray GL LV.X’s “Bright Look”, so you can nullify them with Alakazam’s “Power Cancel”.
Another big part of this deck is the Sceptile from Stormfront. With his Poke-Power “Energy Trans” you can move all your Grass Energies around to your liking. So you can use Yanmega’s Poke-Power twice a turn by retreating it and use Sceptile to transfer all Energies to Yanmega for some big damage output.
Not only big damage can be done, you can also reduce your damage output to a minimum so you don’t have to waste a whole bunch of energies while you’re only killing some weak basics. Another option for Sceptile is this: you can charge up a tech against some decks in one turn, for example a Ditto against Flygon.
Your draw support will be Claydol, Uxie (with or without the LV.X) or even if you feel like, Staraptor FB LV.X. Because of the big impact of Dialga / Garchomp and Luxray / Garchomp decks right now, I wouldn’t play Claydol. It’ll just not survive that long anymore, but if you do, definitely add a Bench Shield to your list.
Uxie is pretty good, with the LV.X you can as well deal out a decent amount of damage against Machamp or Plox and as well with “Psychic Restore” you have a decent Gengar counter. Staraptor FB LV.X is pretty much only a last chance option if you don’t have anything else, normally it’s too slow and get beaten to fast.
I hope you enjoyed reading this and may you build your own Yanmega deck now. Here’s a sample deck list for you.
