One of the first cards I really liked when I started playing again was Mismagius GL LV.X. Mismagius GL’s “Grudge” attack is (situationally) pretty strong, being able to do between 20-70 damage for a Psychic and a Gain. This may not seem that great, but it is one of the better Psychic SP attackers.
But what really makes the card amazing is Mismagius GL LV.X’s power “Magical Return,” which basically lets you pick up TMs and Tools as often as you want (and cannot be Sprayed!). Many people don’t think that this is so strong, but with a little thinking, a lot of ideas are possible. Mismagius combos well with pretty much every Tool in the game, making each of them a lot stronger.
Amulet Coin
If you run 1 Amulet Coin in your deck, then you can attach it to your starter while you set up, giving you extra draw. It could also be useful midgame, for example, using Uxie’s Psychic Restore, and promoting a wall with Amulet Coin (e.g. Mr. Mime MT). The next turn you can use “Magical Return” to remove Amulet Coin and attach Unown Q to retreat your wall as well!
Bench Shield/Lucky Egg
Not really much of a combo, but if you play a lot of Bench Shields you can protect your entire Bench, Manectric-style, and still take it off when you need to use other Tools. Also, you can move around Bench Shields so your most vulnerable Pokemon are always protected.
Energy Gain
One problem with Energy Gain is that you cannot Belt the Pokemon later. This is particularly problematic in Dialga, where you want to start to Deafen with Gain but eventually do 30+ with Belt. It’s not really a combo, but Mismagius can allow you to get the benefits of Gain and Belt if you run both in your deck.
Energy Link
This is one of the worst Tools in existence. First off, you have to have two Energy Links in play for it to even do anything, and then, all it does is move Energies between the two Pokemon they are attached to. However, think about how powerful it is with Mismagius. You can move any Energy (even Special Energies!) between any of your Pokemon as often as you want during your turn, without even occupying the Tool slot on your attacker! This combo basically gives Mismagius GL LV.X an “Energy Trans” type power – for any kind of Energy!
Some Pokemon combos where this could work include something like Mewtwo LV.X/Garchomp C LV.X, where you can use Energy Absorption for an Energy and a DCE, and next turn, attach Unown Q to it, retreat, and then Energy Link the DCE to a Garchomp, attach Gain, and snipe for 80! Also you can use stuff like the Regirock LA/Energy Link combo or Jirachi Unleashed/Energy Link combo for Energy acceleration. It could also help you to bust out the surprise Entei/Raikou Legend drop or continue to switch around Energies among your attackers.
Expert Belt
The big drawback to using Expert Belt is that you lose two Prizes if it is KOed. However, if you calculate that your opponent cannot OHKO you in the next turn, you can Belt your stuff and use “Magical Return” before they can finish it off for two Prizes! Belt suddenly loses its biggest drawback!
Porygon-Z G
Just an SP Pokemon that can pull Tools out of your discard. Situationally useful perhaps in a Tools-based deck.
Staraptor FB + Department Store Girl
With this partnered SP Pokemon, you can search for three Tools at a time for Mismagius to manipulate. Since you already probably run SP Radars or Premier Balls, the Staraptor shouldn’t be too hard to get out. Plus, with Unown Q + Magical Return, he has essentially free retreat!
Unown Q
This is one of the strongest and easiest combos in my opinion. The power to lift and replace Unown Qs effectively gives everything in your deck -1 Retreat Cost. It’s simple, yet so powerful. Like a searchable Moonlight Stadium, that works on every type, and doesn’t benefit your opponent. Note that this strategy can be used for stuff like Unown E and Unown G as well, but Unown Q is my favorite one.
A cheesy combo in Unlimited is to use Alakazam (Base Set) to transfer damage to Unown Q, use “Quick,” then use “Magical Return,” bench Unown Q, and repeat. A similar strategy can be used in Modified to discard Energies (by Energy Linking Unown Q) or Tools using Unown, but this is not that useful and pretty situational. I guess you could also stall by using this recursive combo, but you would probably get called on it anyways.
Uxie/Claydol
The combo here is pretty obvious: Lay down all your Tools, Cosmic/Set Up, and then use “Magical Return” to redistribute them as needed. If you run a Tools-heavy deck, this could net you several extra cards! You can keep it on your Pokemon for storage if you are playing against a hand disruption type deck, or in your hand if you anticipate Relicanth SV or Mismagius SF drops.
Deck Ideas?
Mismagius has a few problems, however. Its attacks are somewhat situational and thus it must be used as a support Pokemon, rather than a main attacker. Support Level X Pokemon are always somewhat difficult to get out, but being an SP makes it easier with PokeTurn. The other problem is that if your opponent is able to kill Mismagius, some of the more situational tools you have may be useless (and Mismagius is not anyone’s definition of a tank!).
I tried making a Mismagius GL LV.X deck, “The Real SP Toolbox,” which used thin lines of cards like Arcanine G, Quagsire GL, Luxray GL LV.X, and Entei & Raikou Legend as its main attackers. It worked alright, but the attackers were not as strong as I would have liked. With so many combos available, I feel like this is an amazing card that is just asking for a good attacking partner in a deck – one that I haven’t been able to identify yet. What are your opinions on this card? And do you have any Mismagius deck ideas?
