I played flygon/mewtwo at league yesterday, and I was testing out against luxblaze with a tech ninetales line. Once mewtwo and flygon x hit the table, you pretty much have the game. Mewtwo can easily be teched into any deck. Period. I expect alot of sp decks to be teching him in as well, just because he’s a great attacker/staller via recover. As for KOing mewtwo, playing a 2-1 line ensures that mewtwo lvl X hits the table.

Oh, and flygon and beedrill auto-win gengar anyways, so mewtwo isn’t a factor.

Mewtwo seems pretty easy to tech into decks, but you’re definitely right about protecting your unleveled mewtwo. Brian’s right, it may be a good idea to use a 2-1 mewtwo, since it will be a lot harder to pull up the second one to go for the OHKO.

It’s worth throwing in any deck that has room for it, just for the SP matchup. It can even form a nice wall as a starter, should you be so unlucky to draw it in your opening hand.

First, I want to say that Flygon by no means autowins Gengar… I made T64 in Nationals this year with a 5-3 record with Flygon; all the games I lost were to Gengar and I would have gone 4-4 if not for a game loss given to one of my opponents who played Gengar. It really mostly depends on the Fainting Spell flips and how quickly you get your Unown G’s on.

Now, it seems as though a lot of SP decks that don’t run Dialga G Lv.X have turned to Ninetails as a tech line against Mewtwo Lv.X… And I’d like to bring up a forgotten card that makes LuxApe, BlazeRay, etc. scoop when it hits the field; Bubble Coat. Hitting up Mewtwo with Bubble Coat means even Ninetails can’t OHKO it, and it won’t be damaged for the rest of the game unless the opponent NMs Ninetails back into the deck and gets it out again. In a counter meta deck that has the extra spot, Bubble Coat makes Mewtwo Lv.X nearly invulnerable.

    • Brian

Why were you koing the gengars? You sit there with the level X active and laugh as they deck and can’t draw 6 prizes before hand. As for bubble coat, it really is a techy card that doesn’t help 70% of the matchups for the deck and is unsearchable atm. It works but I think I’d rather play the Azelf X than bubble coat.

      • http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/ Politoed666

I ran a Weavile build… only two Unown Gs+lackluster hand control=you do the math

It could have been a better matchup, though.

You truly have to guess the metagame perfectly in order to use Mewtwo Lv. X efficiently. You’re sacrificing 4-6 cards in your deck for a tech that could win one matchup, but if you don’t face that matchup, those 4-6 cards are generally useless.

The thing about SP decks is that they are incredibly versatile…just as Beedrill won with Luxray, so you can almost play SP’s with any card you like, just by having Cyrus and some other necessary trainers according to amount of SP’s you’re using.

I’m not discounting the use of Mewtwo Lv. X, I’m just saying you better know you’re playing SP at least 50 percent of the time.

    • Brian

It doesn’t win one matchup. It can win several matchups, including pretty much any sp deck. Against alot of other decks, mewtwo is a big, fat pokemon that can heal 60 damage a turn and has built in energy acceleration. The fact that he can pretty much OHKO any stage 2 just tells you how versatile of a tech he is.

Yeah exactly, that’s why I would suggest using it in a deck that is already running Psychic energies, so that you can get it out if need be, otherwise you are only wasting 2 to 3 spaces on the Mewtwo.

Mewtwo is still of use against decks that just use SPs and Basics as techs. Let’s say they Level up a Luxray, do “Bright Look” and pull up a weak Pokemon for a OHKO. As long as you already have at least two Energy on Mewtwo Lv. X., you can bring him back up, do an Energy drop and OHKO Luxray Lv. X. before it can free retreat or Poke-Turn.

“The only other Pokemon an SP deck might play that could take out your Mewtwo LV.X would be a Ninetales MT. However, I don’t think many people are using that card at the moment.”

Sorry to say, Ninetails MT is a very common tech in Luxape decks (also any other fire decks) due to its versatility. 120 damage to any of your opponent’s pokemon (this is assuming that the player with Ninetails doesn’t suck and has Lucario GL on the field, unlike me) is a rather gamebreaking amount of damage to be able to lay down.

I don’t like him, he’s a solid tech but can be played around. Gigas did’t have much of an issue with him due to Palkia Lv.x and bright look can bring him up before he lvls.

    • Brian

Gigas also could deck the opponet and take a blast from mewtwo, unlike every sp pokemon and pretty much any pokemon for that matter. The only way palkia/luxray works is if they don’t play 2 mewtwos and you can OHKO a 90 hp pokemon, which isn’t impossible with gigas but can be for alot of sp decks (palkia pretty much has to snipe for 80 and drop a bat or else it folds, luxape needs to drag and use fire spin or whatever ape’s 100 damage attack is, toolbox doesn’t really play luxray, and luxape needs to drop a crobat and use blaze’s attack). In any case, the single drop of mewtwo forces the opponet to go absolutely beserk to KO him before he levels up. He can also be teched by himself, meaning you just drop mewtwo and buy yourself a turn to do stuff, such as heal damage with nidoqueen and discard with flygon, in a similar move with some plox lists who didn’t run dusknoir but ran duskull.

A 1-1 Mewtwo line can definitely be teched into a lot of decks, but you don’t see it a whole lot. If it wasn’t or Dialga G Lv. X, Mewtwo would be BDIF.

You mean Mewtwo Lv.X as a main attacker (2-2 line)?

The only hard thing about teching Mewtwo into decks is configuring the energy appropriately. Other than that, it’s pretty easy.

Hmmm…I don’t know about the card’s relevance now (I guess it’s still high), but last format it was absurd how well it shut down the SP mirror. I may have not won my Grinder invite without Mewtwo LV.X, as it carried me through two critical games, and gave me a fighting chance in the one that I lost.

  • PokeChamp

Mewtwo Lv.X really isn’t a threat to SPs anymore. Most SPs at least play a 1-1 line of Luxray GL Lv.X, and that is at the very minimum. With Poke Turn, they can keep bringing something else up over and over again. Of course, they can’t keep doing this forever. Eventually, Mewtwo Lv.X will wall them. But by the time their resources are expended, they should be ahead enough in prizes to be able to win. Many SP decks can tech against Mewtwo (you yourself mentioned Dialga G Lv.X), and most have enough bench control to outplay Mewtwo Lv.X in the first place. Blazeray brings up a different target, Luxape does the same, Luxchomp is capable of sniping 80 to your bench, and they can also control your bench in many other ways. In addition, a lot of SP decks, particularly those that focus on Luxray GL Lv.X as a main attacker, are starting to tech in Mewtwo for the mirror matchup anyway. That means all they have to do is bring up enough bench targets until they develop a prize lead and then wall your Mewtwo Lv.X with a copy of their own.
So already, the question comes to mind: is Mewtwo even worth it in the long run? I think it doesn’t. Can it easily be fitted into decks? I think it can. A 1-1 Mewtwo Lv.X line with 2 Psychic Energy comes to a total of four slots required. Not too bad for a tech, but it could be better. Psychic decks will tech this in easily, but anything else will have minor difficulties taking advantage of it. A great partner for Mewtwo Lv.X would be Flygon Lv.X from Rising Rivals. Bait them out with Mewtwo, and then one-shot them with Flygon Lv.X’s “Xtreme Attack”.

    • WDIF

Mewtwo is a threat to SP’s and always will be. It’s not as much of an auto-win as it was before. Once Mewtwo walls them it’s game over. You can’t be walled and win on prizes except for time (moot) and decking (unlikely, but you can’t Cosmic Power). It doesn’t matter if the SP player has taken 5 and the Mewtwo player taken 0. As long as you have no bench, Mewtwo wins. Crobat G + Skuntank G will never be able to knock out Mewtwo by themselves dues to Recover.

Good SP Mewtwo vs. SP Mewtwo point. Whoever can take the most bench prizes wins. You could retreat your Mewtwo and bring up something on their bench as well but then you could be KO’d by Giga Burn. Both players would like to Turn their bench ASAP.

If either of your psychic energy is prized, you can’t attack with just 1 psychic. It can take up 5 slots.

Hate to bump this from so long ago, but this seems like the best place to ask. If I run into a Mewtwo Lv.X and I have Skuntank G active, will his “Smokescreen” attack with a tails on the flip prevent any attacks from Mewtwo, or is that considered an effect? Obviously, it wouldn't damage Mewtwo, but if I could use “Poison Structure” to poison then use “Smokescreen” to stall out with a couple of lucky flips, I could poison him to death IF it the roll isn't considered an effect. The line Pokemon draws as to what is considered an effect and a game state is often narrow.

Also, since the article talks about Flygon, if I KO the defending Pokemon and Flygon Lv.X is promoted to the active Pokemon, do I discard the top card of my deck?

  • http://www.adamcapriola.com/ Adam Capriola

I'm not an expert on the rules, but I am pretty sure that the Smokescreen
effect is negated by Mewtwo's Body. It says “Defending Pokemon” in the
attack text, so that implies the effect is on Mewtwo and not on Skuntank.
Otherwise it would work…nice thinking though.

And yeah if you promote Flygon active you get the discard (pretty sure about
this). I know Bronzong MD got to use its Body when it was promoted active
    in between turns.
