Luxray GL LV.X, in my opinion, is one of the most powerful Rising Rivals Pokemon cards. The ability to bring one of your opponent’s Benched Pokemon active using the Bright Look Pokemon Power with no drawback is awesome.
One of the most effective Pokemon to “gust” to the Active position and knock out is the opponent’s Baltoy or Claydol. Without Claydol helping to draw cards, the opponent will have a tough time making a comeback. If you have Skuntank G and a Stadium card in play, you can gust their Claydol, Poison it via Skuntank, do Flash Impact for 60, which brings Claydol up to 70 damage. Now that Claydol is Poisoned, it can’t use Cosmic Power, so they may have trouble drawing into a Warp Point to get Claydol out of this sticky situation. At the end of their turn, the poison knocks out Claydol, so you get a free hit on the next Pokemon they bring up.
Obviously you’ll want to include 4 Poketurn cards with any Luxray GL deck. Pick up your damaged Luxray GL LV.X, move up a regular Luxray GL, level it up, and Bright Look another Pokemon for free!
Flash Impact’s 30 damage drawback isn’t that severe. There are a few ways to mitigate or shut it off totally:
Quagsire GL – Target the 30 damage onto Quagsire GL and it won’t take any damage due to its Submerge Pokemon Body.
Manectric PL – Won’t take the recoil damage due to its Electric Barrier Pokemon Body.
Unown G – Do 30 damage to your Unown G, then use its Guard Pokemon Power and attach it to a Pokemon, erasing all damage.
Or just do the 30 recoil damage to a Pokemon that will never go Active, like Claydol (just watch out for bench hitting attacks).
Energy Gain is almost a must for Luxray GL LV.X. It makes its attacks very energy efficient.
There are a couple popular Pokemon to watch out for when using Luxray:
Machamp SF – It knocks out Luxray for only 1 energy. Unown G won’t help; Luxray is weak to fighting so all they’ll need is 2 heads on Hurricane Punch to knock it out. Toxicroak G PL may not be a bad idea to counter this guy.
Toxicroak G Promo – It can knock out Luxray for only 1 Energy and an Energy Gain. Though to get the extra 40 damage from Poison Revenge, one of the Pokemon needs to get knocked out by damage. This is avoidable by KOing the opponent’s Pokemon with something other than damage, like Skuntank G’s poison, or Crobat G’s Flash Bite Pokemon Power.
If you have any thoughts about this card, please comment! We want to hear from you.
