Excellent analysis narrd. I really like the part about using Damage Porter. Another way to take out the Pixie’s or other Psychic basics would be to play a Lake Boundary Stadium to double their weakness. Then you get a Pixie OHKO without using up any Bench space. If you were playing an SP deck the x2 weakness wouldn’t really affect you. If you were playing non-Sp then you could replace the Stadium without another when you withdraw/switch Drifblim.

I traded for two of these at the pre-release.

    • nardd

      Thanks!

And yeah, that’s a good point about Lake Boundary. I always forget about that now that we have Lucario GL, but it does do the same thing. If you plan on taking out multiple pixies, though, it might be better to run SPLuke so you are guaranteed that x2 weakness (rather than your opponent playing a counter stadium before you can get that second KO.

This is such an excellent article, I really appreciate it nardd! I like the idea of using Alakazam with it, I had never thought of that before. You could just pop a couple Drifblim on your bench late game and move all the damage to them, seems awesome.

The problem with this card is the fact that he has only one attack. The energy cost is horrible for this attack, and if the opponet has the pixies waiting there, they will either psyhic restore it out of there, ssu, or drop down the lock and force you to change your entire strategy (you can’t spend 2-3 turns powering it up). I think he’s a solid tech for sp decks but that’s really about it. 40 snipe is nothing spectacular nowadays. For the same energy cost, the always 110 hp gyrados can possibly “snipe” all of the opponet’s pokemon for 10 less. That seems like a better investment to me.

One way to get around the energy build up is to play a Lucian’s Assignment. Again, let’s assume a mid to late game situation. You have an Active Pokemon that has 2-3 energy on it and has taken some damage and is close to KO, or you have a Benched Pokemon that you withdrew a previous turn due to damage, but it still has 2 Energy attached.

Play Drifblim from your hand for surprise effect, retreat or switch to make Drifblim active, play Lucian’s Assignment to transfer 2-3 Energy. If you could only transfer 2 Energy, play one from your hand and presto – with Lake Boundary or Crobat G, snipe a Pixie for an easy KO.

Gyarados is good if you want to try and spread lots of damage, but can’t get you a OHKO.

In your same senario, gyardados could swing for 100….lol. X_X It just seems like he’s the start of something new but honestly can’t compare to other pokemon with attacks with similar energy costs. If the opponet doesn’t have psychic weakness, it’s a pretty terrible card (40 for 2 snipe is okay but nothing great).

      • nardd

Drifblim is a very specialized card, and has a definite purpose in the metagame- take out those pixies. Other than that, yes. It IS weak compared to an evolved pokemon like gyarados. It DOES have an expensive attack for only 40 damage. But it DOES have a place in a couple decks, and fulfills its purpose quite handily if you can spend a turn or two to get the required energies on it.

I see Drifblim as a balanced card. Not too bad, but not format-breaking either.

You know, Drifblim was one of those cards that I kind of went “ehh…” at when I saw the scan, and moved on. However, comboing it with Alakazam 4 Lv.X and TGI TMG was, of course, something I didn’t think of. Really, really stellar idea.

Of course, it’s not the best deck ever, and I don’t think it was meant to be. It’s by no means going to be a dominant card, but it’s good to see this kind of creativity for a card that could otherwise be dumped in the “bad rares” stack after the box is opened. I’ll run over what I think could be some good combos for Drifblim…

    1. Alakazam 4 Lv.X – This would allow a player to get just enough damage on Drifblim to KO an opponent’s Pokémon… it would essentially allow them to choose how much damage to do with Damage Porter, while at the same time keeping Drifblim alive as a tank.

    2. Dialga G Lv.X – Dialga really combos with just about any SP, and Drifblim is no exception. Combined with Dialga’s raw power and trainer lock, Drifblim’s ability as a lategame sniper or cleanup hitter (Damage Porter) could really work.

    3. Straight Drifblim with Crobat G – Think about it… 4 Drifblim FB, 4 Crobat G, 4 Poké Turn. And 4x Energy Gain, and whatever else. This deck would essentially be based on KOing the opponent’s Claydol/Baltoy ASAP to keep them locked down. Mesprit could also work in the deck, too, to completely keep the opponent on lockdown.

    Interesting ideas, all. Good article!

Yeah, the only part I really saw mind-blowing was the Alakazam 4 Lv. X combo. It’s great that you can equip that energy gain and still use TGI Damage Porter. Very well organized article as well :)

Nice article! This card was crazy broken in the pre-release, it won me most of my games.

Very well written article, can’t really add too much as you pretty much nailed everything that Drifblim has going for it. Personally, I’d never consider running a deck around it, as really it’s only useful when it gets that +40 HP boost. However it does give the opponent yet another SP Pokemon to think about in any matchup, especially when combined with the TM. If you could just have an Alakazam and Drifblim waiting end game with the TM…nice way to finish. In all, though, I think Drifblim will end up as a decent tech that will see wide use, even by non-SP decks to KO pixies, hurt Nidoqueen, and as a wall to hide behind.

I like this card too… but something makes me like Honchkrow as a sniper still better. Even though Drifblim hits the ever-popular Psychic weakne…

Just kidding, changed my mind mid-post. Hah.

Not a big fan of tanking or making the the focus of a deck, but it’s a great tech in SP decks as you can pick off Uxie’s, Azelf’s and Mesprit’s along with anything else Psychic weak on your opponent’s bench with a Lucario GL in play. This is an awesome card

I think Starcraft 2 is just a over fanatic version 1. What is the fun in playing the game contrary a mob of cranky players who carry on like its the wrap-upedge of the world when you fail?
SC2 Sucks. Playing online is crap if you lose. Too many wierdos can’t handle losing a game once in a often as it hurts their “so called reputation” I’d rather play comand and conquer three as its more team building enjoyment.
